What Keeps us Opening

July 22, 2011 § 2 Comments

The earth has disappeared beneath my feet,
Illusion fled from all my ecstasy.

Now like a radiant sky creature
God keeps opening.

God keeps opening
Inside of Me.

~ Hafiz

The other day my neighbour told me that Peonies would never open if it were not for the thousands of little black ants who softly pull at their petals.  The Peony depends on the ants in order to unfurl its full flower.

Us humans are not so different, really.  Sometimes, it is through the love of other people that we open up, and gently, we become fearless that way, we learn to become ourselves. Sometimes, though, it is the things that hurt us the most that open our petals – our beauty- to the world.  Often, we become fully human only through the unique combinations of love and sorrow that come our way – we each have our very own recipe for making us who we are and can become.  These days, if ever I feel sad or afraid or full of joy, I remember that the feeling is nothing but a small ant doing its job – it has come to tug me open.
